By September a Houston A/C system has done more work than most do in three years, and "car ac not blowing cold air" is the most-searched service query in our area. Here is how we sort it, and what to expect on the estimate.
Refrigerant does not get "used up"
If the system is low, it leaked. A can from the parts store will make it cold for a few weeks and then you are back where you started, minus the money and often plus a damaged compressor from running low. We start with a proper leak test — dye, electronic detection, and a pressure check — and quote the actual cause.
The four things we find most
A slow leak at a Schrader valve, an O-ring, or a condenser peppered by road gravel. A failing compressor — cold at speed, warm at idle, sometimes a noise when the clutch engages. A blend-door actuator — the system is cold but the air is going to the wrong vent, often with a clicking behind the dash. A cooling-fan or condenser problem — cold on the highway, warm in traffic, because nothing is pulling air across the condenser at a stop.
What it typically costs
Houston-area ranges, not quotes: a leak test and recharge on a system that just needs a valve or seal usually runs a couple of hundred dollars. A condenser is several hundred. A compressor, which should be replaced with a new receiver-drier and a proper flush, is in the four figures on most cars and more on European models. An evaporator is the big one because the dash comes out. We tell you which of these you are looking at before any work starts.
R-134a or R-1234yf?
Most cars built since about 2017 use R-1234yf, which needs different equipment and costs more per ounce. We service both. If a shop only has one machine, ask which.
Before it gets worse
Cabin filter, condenser fins, and cooling-fan operation are worth checking every spring. If the A/C has been "a little weak" since June, that is a leak — September is the month to find it, not next May.
