Timing chainsA rattle on cold start is the chain asking for attention
Timing chains do not stretch; their plastic guides wear and their tensioners weaken. Caught at the rattle it is a guide-and-tensioner job. Ignored, it is an engine. We listen for it at every service and quote it honestly.

The engines that bring us this job are well known: BMW N20 and N26 four-cylinders (2012–2016), the N63 V8, Audi and Volkswagen 2.0T EA888 (2008–2013) with the original tensioner, MINI R56 Cooper and Cooper S (2007–2013), Range Rover and Jaguar 5.0 V8 (2010–2013), the Mercedes M272/M273 balance-shaft and idler issue, and the Nissan/Infiniti VQ35 secondary tensioners. If you drive one of these, the question is not whether, it is when.
The symptoms are a rattle for a second or two on cold start, a check-engine light with cam-timing or correlation codes, or a whine from the front of the engine. We confirm it by measuring chain stretch with the factory tool and scoping the guides where we can, and we tell you whether it is urgent or can be scheduled.
The job is done with OEM or OE-supplier chains, guides, tensioners and the updated parts where the manufacturer issued one, with the timing set to the book and every torque-to-yield fastener replaced. The estimate is in writing before we start and the bill matches it.

Houston-area ranges, before the quote
People search the cost before they search a shop, so here are honest ranges for the jobs we do most. They are typical Houston-area figures for parts and labor, not a quote — your estimate is built on your exact car and what we actually find. The one promise we make on price: the bill matches the estimate.

Frequently asked
How do I know if it is the timing chain?
A rattle for a second or two on cold start that goes quiet, or cam-timing codes on the scan. We measure it rather than guess.
Can I keep driving it?
Sometimes, for a while; sometimes not at all. A chain that has jumped a tooth will destroy the engine. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
How much does a timing chain cost?
Typically $1,200–$3,500 depending on the engine and what is done with it; the ranges below are a guide and the estimate is built on your car.
Is it worth doing on an older car?
On a well-kept car with a known-weak design, yes — it is the difference between a repair and a replacement engine. We will give you a straight answer for your car.
