"My car is shaking" is the single most-searched car symptom in our area, and it is also one of the easiest to narrow down — if you notice when it happens. Tell us that, and we can usually name the part before the car is on the lift.
It shakes when I brake
Almost always the brake rotors. Uneven pad deposits or a warped rotor make the pedal and steering wheel pulse as the pads grab a high spot each revolution. Worse at highway speed, worse after hard stops in Houston heat. We measure rotor runout and thickness and tell you whether they can be resurfaced or need replacing.
It shakes at 55–70 mph, but smooths out faster or slower
Tire balance. A wheel weight fell off, a tire has a belt separation, or a wheel was bent on one of Cartwright Road's potholes. This one feels like it comes through the seat or the wheel at a specific speed. Balancing is quick; a separated tire is not repairable and should be replaced before it fails.
It shakes at idle, especially with the A/C on
The engine, not the wheels. A misfire from a worn plug or coil, a vacuum leak, or a collapsed engine mount lets the engine's vibration into the cabin at a stop. If the check-engine light is flashing, stop driving — that is an active misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter.
It shakes when I accelerate
Driveline. A worn CV axle (front-wheel drive), a failing driveshaft joint (rear-wheel drive), or a motor mount that lets the engine twist under load. Often accompanied by a clunk when shifting into drive.
